Teaching Cards: Enhancing Patient-Centered Evidence-Based Medicine Skills

=====================

Teaching Cards are an inpatient educational tool created at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Family Medicine Residency Program in 2013. These cards are designed to promote efficient and effective teaching sessions on忙碌的医院内医学服务, and their goal is to enhance core clinical knowledge and to improve patient-centered evidence-based medicine 基于证据的技能。共有五十张不同的卡片,每张卡片覆盖一个不同的临床主题。

Overview of Teaching Cards

Teaching Cards are divided into 50 different cards, each covering a specific clinical topic. These topics were selected from the AAFP推荐的家庭医学住院医生针对病情危急的成人护理的课程指南。每张卡片包含背景问题(基本临床问题)和前景问题(聚焦于 PICO 格式的临床查询——患者人群/问题、干预措施、比较、结果),这些问题可以通过团队协作的方式讨论和查找答案。

Instructions for Using Teaching Cards

  1. Choose a Card: Select a card that pertains to a patient on your service or to a topic you want to learn about. Anyone on the team can lead the discussion.

  2. Background Questions: Discuss the background questions as a group, and look up answers as needed.

  3. Foreground Questions: Answer the foreground questions (written in PICO format — 患者人群/问题、干预措施、比较、结果) in one of the following ways:

  • Group Discussion: Everyone can look up the answer to the written foreground question in 5 minutes using an evidence-based resource (list of resources below), and then share the answers they find with the group.

  • Individual Research: Everyone can write a specific clinical question in PICO format, take 5 minutes to research the answer using an evidence-based resource, and then share the answers with the group.

  1. Electronic Versus Paper Versions: You can use the cards electronically on a computer or on your mobile device with the TEACH Cards PDF containing all 50 cards or with the links to individual card files (PNG images). For more durable cards, print them on 4×6 card stock with glossy finish. Paper cards can be displayed in a display banner in the team room for easy access.

EBench Resources

Here are some of the evidence-based resources that can be used to answer the foreground questions:

  • American Family Physician: A peer-reviewed medical journal that publishes clinical practice guidelines, news, and research.

  • Cochrane Database: An online database of systematic reviews and health care interventions.

  • BMJ Clinical Evidence: A collection of evidence-based reviews and evidence summaries published by the BMJ Group.

  • DynaMed: A database of evidence-based information for healthcare professionals.

  • Essential Evidence Plus: A comprehensive database of evidence-based medicine resources.

  • PubMed: A database of life sciences literature including peer-reviewed journal articles, and much more.

  • TRIP Database: A database of travel medicine resources, including information on diseases, vaccines, and travel advice.

  • UpToDate: An online database of evidence-based practice guidelines developed with the input of international experts.

###Teaching Cards represent an innovative approach to medical education, offering a succinct and effective means of teaching clinical topics to housestaff. Their adoption can help ensure that patient care is informed by the latest evidence and best practices.
