after completing his education, sherrell embarked on a career in public service. he began his professional life with the state of north carolina in the south east regional information processing system (sips) department, where he spent thirty years serving the state. his dedication to public service was unwavering, and he was highly respected by his colleagues and superiors.

following his time in sips, sherrell transitioned to the north carolina general assembly, where he served as a sergeant-at-arms. his role within the legislative branch required him to perform a variety of tasks, including overseeing the chamber's operations and ensuring the safety and order of the legislative process. it was during this time that sherrell also found himself involved in the administration of the wake forest fire department, where he served as a board member.

beyond his professional achievements, sherrell was also a dedicated homeowner who took pride in his residence. his love for his home was evident in the care and attention he provided, particularly in maintaining the family's property.

on october 4, 2023, younger sherrell passed away after a brief battle with cancer. he was just 53 years old. the town of wake forest, north carolina, and the surrounding areas were deeply saddened by his loss.
