Clarity Statement for Narcotics Anonymous:
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a fellowship of individuals who have lived with substance use disorder (SUD) and its many related disorders for which alcohol and other drugs are often used as part of their disease process. The primary focus of this fellowship is to provide a 12-step program that assists participants in achieving and maintaining abstinence from drugs and alcohol, and to help them develop healthy, productive lifestyles free from substances.
NA is a program of recovery, not treatment. While many people enter substance use treatment centers with the intention of seeking recovery, few actually achieve it. For those who have become addicted to drugs and alcohol, treatment facilities are primarily focused on managing withdrawal symptoms and reducing cravings to ensure that they do not return to using drugs and alcohol. However, the underlying causes of substance use disorder remain unaddressed.
In contrast, NA provides a comprehensive approach to recovery that addresses the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of substance use. The 12 steps are designed to help participants achieve and maintain abstinence by addressing the root causes of their addiction, which may include mental health issues, relationship issues, and a lack of motivation to change. through group meetings and individual counseling sessions.
The second canon of recovery also introduces the concept of 'dual diagnosis', which acknowledges that many individuals with substance use disorder also have mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This means that substance use is not just a physical issue but also a mental health issue. As a result, NA teaches participants how to address these mental health issues alongside their substance use disorder.
In terms of recovery, NA emphasizes the importance of building a strong support network of peers who can provide guidance and encouragement as participants work towards their recovery goals. This is achieved through the sharing of experiences, strength, and hope among fellow attendees. The program also provides access to other recovery resources, such as AA meeting minutes, sobriety challenges, and ongoing support groups.
Through its comprehensive approach to recovery, NA enables individuals to achieve and maintain long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol, regain control over their lives, and contribute positively to their communities. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use disorder, consider joining a local NA fellowship today. With the support of fellow recovering substance users, addiction can be beaten, and a new life of sobriety, health, and hope can be yours.
