The study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences suggests that many men find traits associated with borderline personality disorder, such as emotional instability and impulsive behavior, to be appealing in physically attractive women. The researchers, led by Alyson Blanchard, a senior lecturer at Bishop Grosseteste University, were inspired by a viral parody video called the Hot Crazy Matrix (HCM) which presents scientifically sound advice on the relationship between a woman’s physical appearance, personality and dating appeal. According to Blanchard, the popularity of the HCM is due to the perception that emotionally unstable women can be exciting and adventurous, offering a sense of不确定性 and drama that some people find appealing. However, the study also points out that such instability can be harmful and potentially risky, and that relationships with emotionally unstable women may not be sustainable in the long term.
In two studies with 525 English-speaking adults, participants were asked to rate the dating appeal of hypothetical individuals, taking into account factors such as facial attractiveness, personality traits, and wealth status. The researchers found that while facial attractiveness and personality traits were the most important factors in determining dating appeal among female participants, men did show a preference for women who were high in borderlines traits, particularly when they were also considered to be of lower physical attractiveness.
This suggests that while many men may find emotionally unstable women visually appealing, it is important to remember that such instability can lead to negative outcomes and that relationships with such women may not be healthy or durable. It is also important for individuals seeking relationships to be aware of their own personality traits and those of their partners, and to actively work on improving those areas that may cause issues in relationships.
