Indoor VBS games are a fantastic way to keep kids engaged and having fun during winter break or other times when it's too cold or rainy to venture outside. These games can be played in small spaces, such as a chapel, Gym, or even a classroom, and are an excellent opportunity to reinforce biblical truths in a fun and interactive way.

Here are some indoor VBS games that are easy to set up, require minimal supplies, and are sure to leave a lasting impression on the kids:

Human Knot

Game Description:

The Human Knot is a team activity in which players form a circle and link hands to untangle a jumbled mass of arms without_releaseing their grip.

Equipment Needed:

  • Several sets of hand-held objects (such as small hula hoops or foam pieces)
  • A designated "Freezer" and "Un-Freezer"
  • A whistle (optional)

How to Play:

  1. Split team members into groups of 5-12.
  2. Stand at the center of the circle and call out "Central," causing players to rush to the specified line.
  3. Once players form a circle, start the count to 15.
  4. When the Freedom Giver (the last player not part of the circle) is tagged, they must unfreeze the player in freeze position.
  5. After several rounds, players must keep track of the number of rounds they can successfully untangle within the time limit.

Bible Trivia

Game Description:

Bible trivia is a quick game that can be played if you have limited indoor space. It's easy to set up, requiring only a whiteboard or notebook to track scores, and can be done as a quick quiz.

Equipment Needed:

  • Whiteboard or notebook
  • A master list of questions
  • A volunteer to host the game

How to Play:

  1. Call out a question and listen for the answer, timing each response.
  2. If correct, the player gets a point. If incorrect, they are eliminated.
  3. Play several rounds and have the children keep track of the number of points they've earned.

Duck, Duck, Goose

Game Description:

Classic game of tag with a twist: the goalie stands in the middle of the room and players line up on two walls, forming a "V." The goalie tries to tag as many players as they can before they get tagged by a player on the opposing wall.

Equipment Needed:

  • Two sets of players
  • A designated "Goose"
  • A whistle (optional)

How to Play:

  1. Name one player as the "Goose."
  2. The Goose stands in the center of the group and waits for someone to tap their head.
  3. When tapped, the Goose says "duck."
  4. The tapped player becomes the "Goose," and the group finds new spots in a circle.
  5. If the player who was "goose" is tagged after "ducking," they become the "Goose" and the hunt begins again.

Verse Hunt

Game Description:

A group activity where children memorize and recall selected Bible verses. Eggs hidden on attendance charts must be found by each child and correctly identified.

Equipment Needed:

  • Eggs
  • Attendance charts
  • Fun treats (candy bars, etc.)

How to Play:

  1. Hide an egg with a corresponding verse in an egg carton for each child.
  2. Give each child the carton with their eggs and take note of the verse on the carton.
  3. Throughout the day, have children take turns showing their eggs to their leaders.
  4. At the end of the day, children must retell the verse they found.
  5. Those who correctly recall the verse receive a fun treat.
