tens neck placement

Using a tens unit for neck pain, commonly referred to as TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), is a nonpharmacological, noninvasive method for managing discomfort and pain during periods that may result from conditions such as neck strain, herniated discs, bone spurs, or pinched nerves. TENS units are typically attached to the skin at strategic routes with electrodes placed on or near the spine to deliver low-level electrical current, which can block or reduce pain signals.

TENS therapy primarily blocks pain signals from reaching the brain by generating a physiological reaction of increased blood flow in the target area. The sensation of tingling in the neck region may also alleviate pain. The specific placement on the neck, either at the base of the neck or on either side of the spine, is crucial. TENS units should be placed so that the electrodes are in close proximity to the spine and the corresponding nerves.

The intensity of the TENS output should be customized for appropriate relief for each individual. The electrical current frequency and duration should start low and adjust as directed by a healthcare professional.
