Contact solution and saline solution are not the same.
Contact solution is a chemically prepare chemical for cleaning and disinfecting contact lenses. This type of solution typically includes a preservative, a binding agent, a buffer, and a surfactant or wetting agent. Its primary purpose is to effectively remove any buildup on the lenses without scratching them and to condition the lenses so that they are moist and wet on the surface of the eye, which facilitates their proper storage in a contact lens solution when they are not being worn.
On the other hand, saline solution is a simple, pH-balanced saltwater solution that can be used to rinse off contact lenses before inserting them into the eyes. Unlike contact solution, which is designed to clean, disinfect, and store contact lenses, saline solution does not have any cleansing agents and should never be used for these purposes. Instead, it is only suitable for rinsing contact lenses to remove any residue from their surface.
When choosing between contact solution and saline solution, it is crucial to select the one that is suited to your specific type of contact lens and eye health needs. Although some contact lens wearers may use saline solution as part of their lens-cleaning regimen, it is important to use a commercial preparation that has been approved for contact lens use to avoid the risks associated with making your own mixture at home.
