Restricted License Rules in Kansas

Introduction

In the state of Kansas, the division of vehicles is responsible for issuing restricted class C or M driver's licenses to individuals who meet specific requirements. This guide aims to provide an overview of the restrictions that come with a restricted license, as well as the penalties for violations.

Restricted Class C and Mlicenses

Who May Apply?

To be eligible for a restricted class C or M license, an individual must be at least 15 years of age. Additionally, they must have successfully completed an approved course in driver training, held an instructional permit issued by the state, and completed a minimum of 25 hours of adult-supervised driving. For those under 16 years of age, the applicant must provide a signed parent or guardian affidavit stating that they have completed the required driving hours.

Restrictions

A restricted license allows the licensee to operate a motor vehicle in class C or M, as designated in K.S.A. 8-234b, and amendments thereto. The restrictions vary depending on the age of the licensee. At least 10 of the required 25 hours of driving must be conducted at night, and the licensed adult supervisor must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid commercial driver's license, class A, B, or C driver's license.

Age 15

At least 15 years of age but less than 16 years of age, the licensee may operate appropriate motor vehicles without any restrictions when going to or from work or school, attending school events, operating passenger cars with an adult holding a valid commercial driver's license, or operating motorcycles with an adult holding a valid class M driver's license.

Age 16

At least 16 years of age, the licensee may operate appropriate motor vehicles without any restrictions during certain hours and under specific conditions, such as going to or from work, school events, religious worship services, or when operating passenger cars with an adult holding a valid commercial driver's license.

The restricted license remains in effect for six months after the licensee reaches the age of 16. After this period, the restricted license may be converted to an unrestricted license by providing evidence of compliance with the requirements of this section and maintaining a satisfactory driving record.

Penalties for Violations

Violations of the restricted license rules may result in fines, court costs, and the suspension of the restricted license. For example, if a 15-year-old licensee is caught operating a motorcycle without an adult supervisor present, they may be fined $25 and their license may be immediately suspended.

##Restricted driver's licenses in Kansas are designed to provide safe driving opportunities for young drivers while ensuring they meet certain safety requirements and understand the risks associated with operating a motor vehicle.
