what is a room parent

A room parent, also known as a “class parent'' for multiple-grade classrooms, is a volunteer position within the home-school connection network. The room parent's main focus is on fostering strong home-school connections and fostering a positive environment for all students. The role of a room parent varies from school to school and is usually coordinated by the school's parent-teacher organization (PTO).

Typical tasks for classroom parents may include:

  • Communicating with the teacher, administrator, and other room parents on a regular basis to discuss upcoming events, projects, or issues that require attention.
Meeting with the teacher to discuss the teacher's preferences for communication and class engagement.
Sending out letters to parents to collect contact information and update them on upcoming class events and activities.
Attending and/or organizing events like Back-to-School Night, class parties, holiday parties, and other special events.
Recruiting other parents to help plan events or provide support.
Maintaining a volunteer database and reaching out to other parents for support with events and projects.
Organizing class parties and enrichment opportunities, including planning, shopping for, and hosting the event.
