Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of flank steak, cut into thin strips against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons of dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of mirin (can substitute rice vinegar)
  • 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon of roasted garlic paste
  • 1/4 cup of light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1 cup of beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons of canola oil
  • 2 broccoli crowns cut into small florets
  • 2-3 green onions sliced
  • 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds

Instructions:

  1. Add the broccoli to a wok or pan with water over medium low heat. Sauté the broccoli until it becomes bright green and is tender but still has a nice crisp.

  2. Preheat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add a few drops of avocado oil to the pan and swirl it around to evenly coat the surface.

  3. Add the sliced beef to the skillet and season with salt and pepper. Toss well to coat with the oil, and cook until the beef is browned on both sides about 3-5 minutes.

  4. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.

  5. In a small bowl, combine the sauce ingredients: soy sauce, oyster sauce, ginger paste, garlic paste, and brown sugar. Whisk well.

  6. Pour the sauce into the skillet with the beef and broccoli, and bring to a simmer.

  7. Simmer/steam the broccoli and beef for about 5-7 minutes, until the sauce thickens and the beef is cooked all the way through.

  8. Add the seared beef back into the skillet, and toss well to incorporate.

  9. garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions, and serve over white rice or cauliflower rice.

Note: If you like a bit of extra heat, you can add a pinch of red chili flakes or some chopped cilantro.

This recipe is easy to make and only takes about 30 minutes to prepare. It makes a great main course for a weeknight meal or can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Reheat in the microwave before enjoying to enjoy your feast.
