lip ties in adults

Lip ties, also known as maxillarylabialfrenulums, refer to the thin band of connective tissue that attaching the upper eyelids to the upper gingiva. Usually, lip ties begin to appear shortly after birth, and they may resolve spontaneously in the first few months of life.

Lip ties in adulthood, however, remain a common condition that can impact both dental and overall health. Here we explore the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of lip ties in adults.

Lip Tie Causes

Lip ties can result from an abnormally tight or thick frenulum, which is the band of connective tissue that attaches the upper eyelids to the upper gum. This excess tissue can impede the movement of the upper eyelids, leading to a variety of symptoms in adult lip ties, particularly in individuals who are >6months old.

Lip Tie Symptoms

Symptoms in adults with lip ties might include

• Reduced eye movement, particularly downward
• Excess tear production

• Difficulty wearing contact lenses

• Sensitivity to light

• Drooping of the upper eyelids
• Puckering of the upper eyelids

Lip Tie Diagnosis

Diagnosing lip ties typically involves a physical examination of the upper eyelids. Doctors may assess eye movement, look for excess泪液分泌物 or test for papillary conjunctivitis by examining the inner surface of the upper eyelids

Lip Tie Treatment

Treatment for adult lip ties is generally surgical. A frequently employed approach is to divide the upper eyelid fascia where it attaches to the superior eyelid skin using either a larger incision or smaller, less invasive techniques, such as an endoscope or specialized knife. This allows the frenulum to remain attached to the underlying tarsus and orbicularis oculi muscle, which supports the upper lid. A bandage or ointment may be applied following surgery.

After surgery, the healing process will typically require 3-7days, with initial symptoms resolving within one week. While it may take several weeks for the eyelids to return to their full position, this is generally considered a minor procedure with a quick recovery.
