T Tube

When a patient requires treatment for gallstones or other conditions that involve the common bile duct (CBD), a T-tube may be placed in the duct. A T-tube is a thin, hollow tube shaped like the letter “T”, which allows for external drainage of bile. The tube is usually inserted through a larger incision in the abdominal wall. Its purpose is to aid in the healing process by providing a route for bile to flow out of the gland and into a bag that is attached to the skin. After the CBD has been cleared and the patient is stable, the T-tube will be removed. However, some patients may require the tube to remain in place for several weeks to ensure proper healing.
