The movie 9 is a 2009 American animated science fiction film directed by Shane Acker and produced by Jim Lemley, Tim Burton, Timur Bekmambetov, and Dana Ginsburg. It follows a ragdoll named 9 who awakens after the war between humans and machines that has destroyed the world, and becomes involved in a group of survivors aimed at stopping the machines.
The film is based on Acker's acclaimed 2005 CG-animated short film of the same name, which won an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film. It features the voices of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, and Crispin Glover, with Martin Landau and Fred Tatasciore providing the cinematography and editing.
The film received generally mixed reviews from critics, earning $48.4 million on a $30 million budget. It was nominated for an Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures award at the 21st Producers Guild of America Awards. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 29, 2009.
